In these cities? How to stay clear
- Avoid marches and large crowds even when they look peaceful, and leave if police start to clear an area. Emergency number in the EU and Albania: 112.
- Paris, 24 Oct: from 9:00 many metro stations were closed on lines 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and RER A (among them Concorde, Charles de Gaulle–Étoile, Champs-Élysées–Clemenceau, Odéon and Daumesnil). The Louvre, Orsay, Orangerie, the Picasso museum, Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille were closed. Police drones are authorised, and some parts of France have curfews at short notice.
- Rome, 24 Oct: the authorities advise avoiding the march routes and the streets around them; expect road closures and traffic restrictions.
- Brussels, 24 Oct: shared e-scooters are suspended for the day.
- Albania: demonstrations in the centres of Tirana, Shkodër, Durrës, Vlorë, Korçë, Kukës and Elbasan, especially around government buildings; public transport, offices and schools may close.

Europe's protests in a minute
Protests in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Albania are setting Europe's streets ablaze — Associated Press, 2026-10-20
France
The largest turnout: between 550,000 and 800,000 people marched on Saturday 17 October in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Bordeaux, Toulouse and other cities; some marches ended in looting and fires, and Limoges town hall burned. On 24 October the police changed the Paris route at the last minute: the union march now runs from Place d'Italie to Porte de Vincennes instead of starting at Bastille, and some protesters still gathered at Bastille. Unions have called a national strike for 5 November.

Housing: since late September a protest camp over rents and evictions has filled Madrid's Puerta del Sol (the Sol metro station has been closed), and there are camps in other cities too. On 24 October the Valencia webcam shows tents across Plaza del Ayuntamiento. A snap general election is set for 29 November.

Italy
Marches against living costs and military spending on 17 October turned into two days of clashes in central Milan, around Piazza del Duomo; at least 200 people, mostly minors, were arrested, and the government sent troops to the city. There was unrest in Turin and Bologna too. A movement has called for protests every Saturday at 3 p.m., and unions a general strike for 20 November. In Rome, many marches cross Piazza Venezia.

FAQ
Where are the protests in Europe this weekend?
As of 24 October 2026: in Paris a union march from Place d'Italie to Porte de Vincennes on Saturday 24 October (moved from Bastille at the last minute), and a national strike in France on 5 November; a national protest in Tirana on 24 October; in Italy a call for protests every Saturday at 3 p.m. and a general strike on 20 November; housing camps in Spain. Check local police and news for routes before you go.
Can I watch the Paris protests live?
Yes, while a march is on: the France player on this page switches between live streams from news outlets and people filming in the march. The fixed webcams (Sacré-Cœur, Eiffel Tower) are not on the route.
Why are people protesting across Europe?
The protests are separate and not coordinated, but they share rising costs: fuel prices pushed up by the wars in Iran and Ukraine, rents and housing in Spain and Portugal, and school and university conditions in France, Belgium and Italy.
Is it safe to travel to Paris during the protests?
Stay away from marches and crowds, even peaceful ones, and leave if police start clearing an area. On 24 October many Paris metro stations closed and the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and other major museums shut. The “how to stay clear” section on this page links each country's official updates. The emergency number in the EU and Albania is 112.
