FAQ

What is the Kp index?

A 0–9 scale of how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is. The higher it is, the stronger the aurora and the further south it can be seen. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center publishes it every 3 hours.

How far south can the aurora be seen?

At Kp 3–4 mostly in northern Norway, Finland, Iceland, Alaska and northern Canada; at Kp 5–6 also in southern Scandinavia, Scotland and the northern US; at Kp 7–9, during big storms, as far as England, central Europe, the central US and even Hokkaido in Japan.

When should I watch the aurora cams?

When it's night there and Kp is 4 or more. The cams below are sorted with the darkest sky first.
