The koyo front: when each spot peaks

The Japan Weather Association's third forecast (28 Oct) says this year's colours are on time or late across Japan. Northern mountains turned early, but warm weather since has held the lowlands back, and November is expected to stay warm. Kyoto's Arashiyama is forecast from about 13 November (Weathernews says about the 23rd), Mt. Takao from mid November.

Tohoku

Colour arrives first in the north. In the Tohoku mountains the season is winding down, but Kakunodate's samurai street and Yamadera are forecast to stay good into early–mid November.

Nikko

Up in Oku-Nikko (Yumoto, Lake Chuzenji) the peak has passed; now the colour is down by Shinkyo Bridge and Futarasan Shrine. Irohazaka jams badly at weekends.

Karuizawa, Nagano & Gunma

Karuizawa's Kumoba Pond is at its peak now, and Lake Momiji is lit up at night. Kamikochi's leaves are falling, with snow on the Northern Alps behind.

Mt. Fuji, Hakone & Okutama

Lake Kawaguchi's season is November; during the Momiji Festival (7–29 Nov) the Momiji Corridor is lit up at night. Mitake Valley is late this year — from late November.

Kyoto

Most of Kyoto is still green. Arashiyama is forecast from mid November, Kitano Tenmangu and Kodaiji from late November, and Kiyomizu-dera in early December — later than usual. Evening illuminations are starting too.

When is autumn-leaf season in Japan?

For 2026 the forecast is on time or late across Japan (Japan Weather Association, 28 Oct). Hokkaido, the Tohoku mountains and Oku-Nikko peaked in October; early November is Karuizawa, central Nikko and Daisen; mid to late November is Kyoto, Nara and Lake Kawaguchi, with Kiyomizu-dera in early December. The calendar above shows each spot's forecast.

Which cameras show autumn leaves in Kyoto?

Kitano Tenmangu, the Philosopher's Path, Mt. Daimonji, Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama and Nene-no-michi in Higashiyama. Kyoto usually peaks from mid to late November.

Can I see the leaves at night?
